As a first time gun owner, heading to the range can be intimidating and overwhelming. Before you head out here are some of the fundamentals you need to know!
There are four main rules for making sure you are handling your firearm safely.
At ranges you will normally have a shooting line. It is important that the muzzle stays pointed in a safe direction (down range in most cases) the entire time. Ask for your range's safety rules if you have any questions about what is allowed on the range.
Sometimes taking a basic pistol class can give you the best foundation for understanding firearm rules quickly and learning how to shoot properly. Bad habits can be hard to unlearn.
When you are not using your firearm, it is your responsibility to make sure that it is stored away from unauthorized people. This includes but is not limited to children, other family members, and friends. There are a variety of options you can use to lock your firearm away. Some of these include lockboxes or gun safes. Some of the safes lock by code, key, or biometric locks. Make sure you do the research and find the best option for you and your specific scenarios.
Every firearm requires maintenance. You can check your owners manual to find the specifics on how to clean and maintain your firearm. If you don’t have access to your owners manual, you can always check the manufacturers website or bring it to your local gunsmith.
If you are going to carry your firearm for personal defense, you need to know the laws in your state. You are responsible for understanding the legal boundaries. There are also some companies that you can purchase concealed carry insurance to help with self-defense liability protection.
